The Southeast Missourian provides Artificial Intelligence tools to its journalists. Most of these tools are optional and include providing suggestions for headlines and summary statements. Some story drafts, like fire reports, may be automatically formatted from official data and then reviewed by writers and editors. The Southeast Missourian also uses AI to do an initial review of stories to determine how they could be better – or to provide ideas for follow-up. At times, AI may be used for image illustrations, in which case it will be clearly labeled. Our goal is to help our writers create more local stories that are relevant and of high quality. Key to our philosophy is that AI is a tool, which must be used smartly, carefully, transparently, and never to deceive. It is not a replacement for human decision-making.
